At least 40 killed in Russian strike on Komyshuvakha school in Zaporizhzhia region

Zelenskyy says 40 now confirmed dead after ‘insane’ Russian attack on school – Europe live

At least 40 people died when a school in Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, was hit by a Russian strike on Monday. The attack targeted the educational facility amid ongoing conflict in the area.

The strike came as the Kremlin addressed the outcome of the recent US midterm elections. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russian state media that Moscow hopes the results will not affect what it described as former president Donald Trump’s “peacemaking efforts” on Ukraine. “We are sincerely counting on [Trump] continuing his peacemaking efforts,” Peskov said.

Peskov also commented on the internal situation in the United States, saying governance will be “almost impossible in the coming years given the level of internal division and polarisation.” He added that, as a European politician, he would focus on trade policies, support for Ukraine, and NATO.

The attack on the school in Komyshuvakha occurred in a region that has seen repeated clashes since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. The Zaporizhzhia region remains a contested area, with Ukrainian forces attempting to hold ground against Russian advances.

The death toll of at least 40 from the school strike reflects the continuing toll on civilians in the conflict. No further details about the circumstances of the strike or possible survivors were immediately available.

The Kremlin’s remarks about US politics and Trump’s potential role in Ukraine peace efforts came amid heightened international attention on the conflict and its global ramifications. The midterm elections have introduced new uncertainty in Washington’s foreign policy approach, particularly regarding support for Ukraine.

Monday’s attack adds to a series of strikes on civilian targets since the war began. The school in Komyshuvakha was one of several educational institutions that have suffered damage or destruction during the fighting.

As of early November 2026, the conflict in Ukraine remains unresolved, with neither side gaining decisive ground. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, especially as diplomatic efforts face challenges from political shifts in key countries.

The Komyshuvakha strike underscores the ongoing risks faced by civilians in conflict zones, where schools and other non-military sites have become targets amid the hostilities.
