Gervonta Davis escalated a social media feud with rapper Papoose this week after taking aim at Claressa Shields’ outfit at her recent album listening event. The boxer first sparked controversy by calling the boxer-turned-rapper’s partner’s look a “hot a** mess” following Shields’ appearance on 2 November in Atlanta.
Shields, who released her debut album What Did You Expect, wore a one-piece jumpsuit featuring a lace-up detail along the back. While the event was a chance for fans to hear a preview of her music, Davis focused on critiquing her style. He posted his comment on Instagram, triggering a swift response from Papoose.
Papoose defended Shields on his Instagram Story, referencing Davis’ March 2025 fight against Lamont Roach Jr. He wrote, “Roach was getting off on that na @gervontaa That na said he had grease in his eye. The girl who did his hair said she ain’t use none.” The fight ended in a majority draw after Davis unexpectedly took a knee in the ninth round. Davis had claimed that hair grease had caused irritation in his eyes, a statement disputed by his hairdresser.
The rapper’s defence extended beyond the outfit jab. He posted further insults aimed at Davis, touching on past domestic violence allegations. “You too tall to be making threats bozo. Now, try that shit you did to your girlfriend on me. Woman beating a** n***a,” Papoose wrote. He also mocked Davis’s dancing, saying, “I think dancing like a woman every chance you get is corny. But who’s judging? @gervontaa”
Davis responded by tagging Papoose in a now-deleted Instagram Story with a direct threat. “@papoose I would put you to sleep..now try what you did with old body with me..I bet they picking you up! Corny no lol,” he wrote.
Papoose has yet to respond to the latest jab. The back-and-forth has unfolded publicly on Instagram, with neither side showing signs of backing down.
The dispute originated solely from Davis’s critique of Shields’s fashion at the listening event. The comment ignited a heated exchange that quickly expanded beyond the initial topic to include personal insults and references to past controversies involving Davis.
Claressa Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and professional boxer, has been branching out into music, drawing attention beyond the ring. Her debut album event was meant to highlight this new direction, but instead became the backdrop for a public clash between two figures from different corners of the entertainment world.
The fight between Davis and Roach remains a notable moment in Davis’s career, as it ended his streak of wins. Papoose’s use of that event as ammunition in this feud brings a past sporting moment into a current public spat.
The exchange highlights how social media continues to blur lines between sports, music, and personal lives, with disputes escalating rapidly in the public eye. As of 5 November 2026, no in-person confrontation or further developments have been reported.
