British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua has sparked conversation across social media after publicly expressing his admiration for Ghana while calling out misleading narratives from his Nigerian counterparts.
During a courtesy visit to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on June 16, 2025, Joshua revealed that Ghana had not originally been on his travel agenda. He admitted that perceptions back home had shaped his views, with many Nigerians placing their country above Ghana. However, his experience in Accra quickly changed his perspective.
“Coming to Ghana actually wasn’t on my agenda. Because, for some reason, everyone in Nigeria puts Nigeria above Ghana. But I’m now here and I’m looking around like, they’ve been lying to me,” Joshua remarked, drawing laughter and applause from those present.
Since arriving in Ghana on June 13, Joshua has immersed himself in the country’s vibrant culture, engaging in public appearances and private meetings as part of the Battle of the Beasts boxing event, spearheaded by Sharaf Mahama.
The heavyweight champion has been deeply moved by Ghana’s hospitality, infrastructure, and rich heritage, expressing his admiration for the nation.
“I’m impressed with your beautiful country, amazing culture, hospitality, the airport, the organisation, and I can’t wait to go back and tell everyone across the world how beautiful this place is,” he added.
Joshua’s visit has not only strengthened ties between Ghana and the boxing world but has also ignited discussions about African unity and cultural appreciation. His candid remarks have resonated with many, reinforcing Ghana’s reputation as a must-visit destination.
