At the launch of Ghana’s 2025 Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, delivered a bold message to cybercriminals: “We’re not deporting you. We’re jailing you right here in Ghana.”
Speaking at the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) in Accra, Sam George emphasized that the government is intensifying efforts to clamp down on online fraud, romance scams, and human trafficking linked to cybercrime.
Backed by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the ministry is actively tracking perpetrators—both local and foreign.Between May and July this year, joint operations led to the arrest of 65 suspects, including 49 foreign nationals. Many were victims of trafficking who later became entangled in sophisticated online fraud schemes.
“We won’t make Ghana a haven for cybercrime,” George warned. “Those exploiting foreign nationals to commit fraud—we’re on your trail.”
CID Director General COP Lydia Donkor echoed the minister’s stance, assuring the public that offenders will face prosecution, not just deportation.
The event also spotlighted alarming statistics: over 2,000 cases of cyberfraud have already been reported in 2025, surpassing last year’s figures. Cybercrime losses across Africa have topped $3 billion since 2019, with sectors like finance, healthcare, and government being prime targets.
To combat this, experts like Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann from the University of Ghana called for more training in cybersecurity, while CSA Director-General Divine Selase Agbeti urged citizens to report incidents via the national hotline: 292.
