Eduardo Camavinga’s first home was a refugee camp. Two decades later, he was lifting the Champions League trophy with Real Madrid. His journey is one of the most striking in modern football.

Born in Cabinda

Camavinga was born on 10 November 2002 in a refugee camp in Cabinda, Angola. His parents were refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who had fled conflict.

To France

The family moved to France when he was a young child. They settled in Brittany, where Camavinga discovered football.

Rennes

He joined the youth academy of Stade Rennais and progressed quickly. He made his professional debut as a teenager and became one of the youngest players to shine in Ligue 1, attracting attention from Europe’s biggest clubs.

Real Madrid

In 2021, Real Madrid signed him for a fee of €31 million. At first he was used as a substitute, often changing games with his energy.

Doubles

Over the following seasons, he helped Real Madrid win La Liga and Champions League doubles in 2022 and 2024, establishing himself as a key squad player.

Versatility

Camavinga is a central midfielder but has also played at left-back. He is known for his ball-winning, long legs, dribbling out of pressure and composure on big occasions.

France

Born in Angola, he represents France. He came through French youth teams, reaching the under-21 level, before becoming a senior international.

An African story

Camavinga’s roots in Congo and his birth in Angola are part of his story. Fans in Central Africa follow his career as one of their own.

Refugees and football

His rise is often cited as an example of what refugee children can achieve when given safety and opportunity, a message that resonates at a time of global displacement.

Early promise

At Rennes, Camavinga became a regular while still a teenager, impressing with his maturity and his ability to win the ball and carry it forward. Scouts across Europe watched him closely before Real Madrid moved.

Big-game temperament

Many of his best performances have come in the Champions League, where his energy off the bench helped Real Madrid turn matches in their favour.

From a camp to the Bernabéu

Camavinga’s journey began in a place most people hope never to see. It led to one of the most famous stadiums in the world, a reminder that talent can come from anywhere if it is given a chance.
