Zooey Deschanel has thrown cold water on hopes for a “New Girl” reunion, citing “complicated legal stuff” as a barrier to any potential reboot. In an interview with the California Post, Deschanel expressed doubts about the feasibility of revisiting the beloved series, which aired on Fox from 2011 to 2018 and featured 146 episodes.
“I just don’t think that’s gonna happen, but, you know, anything could happen,” the 46-year-old actress said. Her comments came ahead of her upcoming sold-out performances with her indie pop band She & Him across California. Deschanel added that while fans often joke about a reunion, the legal hurdles involved in such a project are substantial.
Deschanel, who portrayed middle school teacher Jessica Day, confirmed that she would eagerly reunite with her co-stars—Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, Jake Johnson, and Damon Wayans Jr.—“in a heartbeat.” However, she acknowledged the complexity of coordinating a reunion among the cast and production teams. “There’s a lot of complicated legal stuff to putting a reunion together,” she noted.
The series earned five Emmy nominations during its run and developed a devoted fanbase, with many viewers finding comfort in its quirky humor and relatable characters. “I’m proud of it, and I definitely see with fans that they are still connecting with it, so that’s so nice,” Deschanel remarked. She emphasized the show's lasting impact, stating, “It connected with people in a way where it felt comforting and something that people wanted to watch again and again.”
Despite the absence of a “New Girl” revival, Deschanel remains busy with various projects. She will be in attendance next month at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Hollywood, where she and her former cast members will receive the Rising Phoenix Award. “I love seeing everybody,” she said. “I spent so much time with them doing the show, so it was really fun. It’s always fun to see everyone.”
Deschanel's current schedule is full. She is on tour this summer with band member M. Ward, promoting their music while also participating in the Toronto International Film Festival with her latest project, “Trash Mountain.” She expressed enthusiasm for her upcoming shows in California, stating, “I always love my LA shows.” The performances at The Orpheum Theater on October 2 and 3 are part of a larger tour titled “Pump Up the Volumes,” where Deschanel plans to return to their original sound.
“This tour, we’re going back to all the original stuff, like our ‘Volume’ records which are all songs I mostly wrote except for a few covers,” she explained. The focus on their earlier work marks a nostalgic return for the duo, who have been making music together since 2008.
As Deschanel continues to balance her music career and acting projects, the possibility of revisiting “New Girl” remains uncertain. The legal complexities, combined with the cast's busy schedules, indicate that fans may have to wait a long time for a reunion. In the meantime, Deschanel's commitment to her current endeavors keeps her in the public eye, showcasing her versatility as an artist.
