Before she made Nollywood’s biggest comedy of 2016, Kemi Adetiba was known for music videos. She had directed videos for some of Nigeria’s top artists and hosted television shows. Her move into feature films produced two of the most talked-about Nigerian films of the decade: The Wedding Party and King of Boys.

Early career and The Wedding Party

Adetiba was born in Lagos. She studied law at the University of Lagos before turning to media. She worked as a radio and television presenter and then as a music video director, working with leading Nigerian artists. She studied filmmaking at the New York Film Academy, which helped her move into longer-form storytelling. Her feature debut, The Wedding Party (2016), was a comedy about a chaotic Lagos wedding. It became the highest-grossing Nollywood film at the time.

King of Boys and its themes

In 2018, she wrote and directed King of Boys, a crime drama about Eniola Salami, a businesswoman and political godmother with ties to the Lagos underworld. Sola Sobowale’s performance as Eniola was widely praised. In 2021, Netflix released King of Boys: The Return of the King, a seven-part series continuing the story. It was Netflix’s first Nigerian original series.

Adetiba’s work explores power, gender, politics and family. King of Boys in particular depicted the links between crime and politics in Lagos.

Style and women in Nollywood

Her music video background shows in her visual style, use of music and fast pacing. Adetiba is part of a generation of women directors, alongside Genevieve Nnaji, Funke Akindele and others, who have shaped Nollywood’s commercial and critical success. Her films have won awards at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and other events. Before films, Adetiba directed videos for leading Nigerian artists, building a reputation for polished visuals. That experience shaped her eye for colour, movement and music on screen.

The sequels and her own scripts

The success of King of Boys created a loyal fan base, and audiences have continued to call for more stories about Eniola Salami. Adetiba writes as well as directs, giving her strong control over her stories and characters. Kemi Adetiba made a wedding comedy and a political thriller back to back. That range explains why audiences now expect a Kemi Adetiba release to be an event.
