A church deacon, whose son is framed and killed by corrupt police, sets out to find those responsible. It sounds like a familiar revenge story, but The Black Book became something else for Nollywood. Released on Netflix in September 2023, it climbed the platform’s global charts and was watched by millions outside Nigeria.
The story and Editi Effiong
Paul Edima, played by Richard Mofe-Damijo, is a quiet deacon with a violent past. When his son is killed after being falsely accused in a kidnapping, he returns to his old skills to take on the people behind it, including powerful figures in government and the police. The film was directed by Editi Effiong, a tech entrepreneur and filmmaker. It was his feature directing debut.
Funding, RMD and Netflix
The production was financed by a group of investors and supporters rather than a single studio, an unusual approach in Nigeria.

Richard Mofe-Damijo, a veteran Nollywood star, delivered a performance widely praised by critics. The role showed him in a darker, action-heavy light. The cast included Ade Laoye, Sam Dede, Alexx Ekubo and Bimbo Akintola. The film reached the global top ten for non-English films on Netflix and charted in many countries.
Themes, production and criticism
The film deals with police brutality, corruption and justice, themes that resonated in Nigeria after the EndSARS protests. Critics noted its polished action scenes and cinematography, which compared well with international thrillers. Its success encouraged more investment in high-quality Nigerian thrillers. Some reviewers felt the plot followed familiar formulas, but most agreed it was a landmark for Nollywood on streaming.
At its heart, the film is about a father’s grief and anger. Mofe-Damijo plays Paul as quiet and restrained, which makes the violence that follows more shocking.
Effiong's background and release
Before filmmaking, Editi Effiong worked in technology and design. He brought a businesslike approach to raising money and managing the production. The film’s success led to public discussion of a sequel and greater interest from investors in similar projects. On Netflix, the film was available to viewers in more than 190 countries from the day of its release.
The Black Book told a story many Nigerians knew from the news. Netflix showed that audiences far from Lagos wanted to watch it too.
