When Christian Okoye arrived in the United States from Nigeria, he was a discus and hammer thrower hoping to compete at the Olympics. He had never played American football. A few years later, he was running over defenders in the NFL. In 1989, the Kansas City Chiefs running back led the league in rushing yards, and fans gave him a nickname that stuck: the Nigerian Nightmare.
Early life and the NFL Draft
Okoye was born in Enugu in 1961. He excelled in athletics as a young man in Nigeria. He won a scholarship to Azusa Pacific University in California, where he competed in track and field, winning national titles in throwing events. When he was left out of Nigeria’s Olympic team, he turned to American football. His size, strength and speed impressed coaches immediately.

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted him in 1987. Okoye’s running style was direct and punishing. Defenders often struggled to tackle him, and his nickname became famous across the league.
1989, injuries and the Hall of Fame
In 1989, he led the NFL in rushing yards and was selected for the Pro Bowl, one of the league’s highest honours. Injuries shortened his career, and he retired after the 1992 season. After football, he started a foundation to help young people through sport and education, including in Nigeria. He opened the door for later African players in American football and is remembered by Chiefs fans as one of the team’s toughest players.
He was later inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame. He has remained connected to Nigeria, encouraging young athletes to pursue education and sport.
Learning the game and his size
Okoye admitted that when he started, he barely knew the rules of American football. Coaches taught him the basics, and his raw athleticism did the rest. Within a few seasons, he went from a beginner to one of the most feared running backs in the professional game. At his peak, he was unusually big for a running back, yet still fast enough to break away from defenders. That combination made him a nightmare for tacklers and a favourite of Chiefs fans at Arrowhead Stadium.
Christian Okoye went to America to throw a discus. He ended up as the man defenders feared most, the first great Nigerian star of the NFL.
