Victor Wanyama: the Kenyan midfielder who scored against Barcelona and reached the Premier League

On 7 November 2012, Celtic faced Barcelona at a packed Celtic Park in Glasgow. Barcelona, with Lionel Messi and Xavi, were among the best teams in the world. In the first half, a young Kenyan midfielder rose to head Celtic into the lead. His name was Victor Wanyama, and Celtic went on to win 2-1 in one of their most famous European nights. The goal made Wanyama a hero in Kenya and opened the door to a career in the Premier League.

Early life and Celtic

Victor Mugubi Wanyama was born on 25 June 1991 in Nairobi. He comes from a footballing family: his father played for AFC Leopards, and his older brother McDonald Mariga also became a professional. McDonald Mariga played for Inter Milan, becoming the first Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League as part of Inter’s 2010 squad. The brothers inspired a generation of Kenyan players.

Wanyama moved to Europe as a teenager, playing in Sweden and then Belgium with Beerschot. In 2011 he joined Celtic in Scotland, where he won league titles and became a key midfielder.

The Barcelona goal and the Premier League

His header against Barcelona in the Champions League made him famous across Europe and in Kenya. In 2013 he joined Southampton, becoming one of the first Kenyans to play in the Premier League. In 2016 he moved to Tottenham Hotspur, reuniting with manager Mauricio Pochettino. He was part of the squad that reached the 2019 Champions League final.

Wanyama was a strong, physical defensive midfielder known for tackling, strength and occasional long-range goals. He captained Kenya’s national team, the Harambee Stars, and led them at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, their first appearance in 15 years. In 2020 he moved to CF Montréal in Major League Soccer.

Injuries and legacy

Knee injuries affected the later years of his time at Tottenham. Wanyama is seen as one of the most successful footballers East Africa has produced. Wanyama’s success abroad encouraged young Kenyan players to believe they could reach Europe’s top leagues. Football academies in Nairobi often cite him as an example. Standing tall and strongly built, he was hard to knock off the ball, and managers used him to protect the defence in big matches.

Victor Wanyama’s header against Barcelona lasted a second. In Kenya, people still describe where they were when they saw it.
