The red carpet in Lagos fills with gowns, agbadas and outfits designed to go viral. Cameras flash, and social media judges every look. The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, known as the AMVCAs, have become the biggest night in Nollywood’s calendar since they were launched in 2013.
Origins and categories
The awards were created by MultiChoice, the pay-TV company behind the Africa Magic channels. The first ceremony was held in 2013 in Lagos. As the name suggests, many categories are decided by public votes, giving audiences a direct role. Other categories are judged by industry panels. The awards honour films, television series, actors, directors, writers, cinematographers and other craftspeople. Some categories focus on films in specific African languages.

The red carpet and winners
The AMVCA red carpet is famous for daring fashion. Stars often wear custom designs, and outfits are discussed online for days. Although centred on Nollywood, the awards include nominees from Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and other countries. Over the years, winners have included films such as The Wedding Party and stars like Funke Akindele, Ramsey Nouah and Kate Henshaw.
The awards also honour veterans with special prizes, such as the Industry Merit Award, recognising lifetime contributions.
Criticism, broadcast and influence
Critics argue that viewers’ votes can favour popularity over quality and that the awards focus heavily on Nigerian productions. The ceremony is broadcast live across Africa on DStv and GOtv. An AMVCA can boost an actor’s career and a film’s visibility, helping with streaming deals and international interest. The awards include categories for films in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and other African languages, recognising that much of the continent’s storytelling happens outside English.
A Trailblazer Award honours young talent who are making a mark in the industry, often launching careers.
Social media, hosts and venues
Each year, red-carpet photos and winners’ speeches trend across African social media, adding to the event’s influence on popular culture. The ceremony is usually hosted by well-known presenters and comedians, and the show includes musical performances by top artists. The awards have been held at large venues in Lagos, including the Eko Hotel and Suites, where thousands of guests attend.
Nollywood produces hundreds of films a year. The AMVCAs are the night when the industry dresses up and decides, with its audience, which ones mattered most.
