A teenage girl transfers to an elite private school in Cape Town because she believes a swimming star there is the sister abducted from her family at birth. That is the premise of Blood & Water, a South African teen drama that premiered on Netflix in May 2020. It reached viewers worldwide and helped prove that African series could compete on global streaming charts.
The story and the real case behind it
Puleng Khumalo, played by Ama Qamata, grows up in a family haunted by the abduction of her older sister as a baby. When she meets Fikile Bhele, played by Khosi Ngema, at a party, she suspects Fikile is her lost sister and transfers to Parkhurst College to investigate. The series was inspired by the real story of Zephany Nurse, a baby abducted from a Cape Town hospital in 1997 and found 17 years later living with another family nearby. The case made headlines in South Africa.
Netflix, the cast and later seasons
Blood & Water followed Queen Sono as one of Netflix’s early original series from Africa. Netflix was investing in African content to grow its audience on the continent and offer new stories globally.

The series appeared on Netflix’s most-watched lists in several countries outside Africa, including the United States. Its mix of mystery, romance and school drama appealed to young viewers. Ama Qamata and Khosi Ngema became stars. The cast also included Gail Mabalane, Thabang Molaba and Dillon Windvogel. Netflix renewed the series for several seasons, expanding the mystery and exploring characters’ relationships. The fourth season was released in 2024.
Representation, production and style
The show depicted Black South African teenagers in elite settings, exploring class, privilege and identity, as well as queer relationships. It was produced by Gambit Films and filmed in Cape Town. The series helped open doors for other African youth dramas on streaming platforms. The series features South African music, including amapiano and Afro-pop, and its characters’ fashion became a talking point among young viewers. The soundtrack introduced international audiences to South African artists.
Fikile is a star swimmer, and pool scenes play a key role in the story. Blood & Water began with a real abduction that shocked Cape Town. It ended up showing millions of viewers around the world a South Africa they had rarely seen on screen.
