He arrived at Brentford in the Championship and left as one of the most productive attackers in the Premier League. Bryan Mbeumo, a left-footed forward who plays mainly from the right, scored and created goals season after season. In 2025, Manchester United signed him in one of the summer’s biggest transfers.

Early life, Troyes and Brentford

Mbeumo was born in 1999 in Avallon, France, to Cameroonian parents. He developed at Troyes, making his professional debut there. At Troyes, he impressed as a teenager in the French second division, attracting interest from clubs abroad. Brentford signed him in 2019. He formed a strong partnership with Ollie Watkins and Saïd Benrahma in the Championship, and Brentford won promotion to the Premier League in 2021.

The Premier League and Cameroon

In the Premier League, Mbeumo became a key player, linking up with Ivan Toney and later leading the attack. In the 2024-25 season, he scored 20 Premier League goals. In the summer of 2025, Manchester United signed Mbeumo for a large fee, making him one of the club’s main attacking signings. Mbeumo represented France at youth level but chose to play for Cameroon at senior level, making his debut in 2022. He played at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

Style and the diaspora choice

He is known for his work rate, his left foot, set pieces and ability to both score and assist. Like many players born in Europe to African parents, Mbeumo chose an African national team, strengthening Cameroon’s attack. Brentford’s data-driven recruitment found Mbeumo at a modest price and sold him for much more, a model admired across football.

At Brentford, Mbeumo’s link-up with Ivan Toney was one of the most productive partnerships in the Premier League. Mbeumo’s crosses and through balls created many of Toney’s goals, and the two often swapped positions.

Set pieces, AFCON and the fee

Mbeumo took corners and free kicks for Brentford and scored many goals from set pieces, adding to his value. He represented Cameroon at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where the Indomitable Lions reached the last 16. His transfer was one of the biggest in Brentford history. Mbeumo was a little-known Troyes player when Brentford found him. Six years later, he was walking into Old Trafford as a headline signing.
