His full name is Daniel Nii Tackie Mensah Welbeck, and every part of it after “Daniel” points to Ghana. Danny Welbeck has spent his career in English football, surviving serious injuries to become a club legend at Brighton.

Longsight

Welbeck was born on 26 November 1990 in Manchester to Ghanaian parents and grew up in the Longsight area of the city.

Manchester United

He came through Manchester United’s youth teams and scored on his senior debut in 2008. He was part of the squad that won the 2008-09 League Cup and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup, and went on loan to Preston North End and Sunderland.

First-team regular

From the 2011-12 season, Welbeck became a regular in United’s first team, known for his work rate, pace and ability to play across the front line.

England

At Euro 2012, Welbeck scored a backheeled winner in the 79th minute as England beat Sweden 3-2 in Kyiv. He also represented England at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, earning 42 caps.

Arsenal

In September 2014, he joined Arsenal for £16 million. His time there brought important goals but also serious knee and ankle injuries that kept him out for long periods.

Watford

After Arsenal released him in 2019, he joined Watford in August 2019, rebuilding his fitness.

Brighton

A year later he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion. There, playing with growing confidence, he became Brighton’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, a remarkable achievement for a player some had written off.

Big Arsenal moments

Welbeck’s Arsenal years produced memorable goals. In March 2015, he returned to Old Trafford and scored the winner against his old club Manchester United in an FA Cup quarter-final. In February 2016, back from a long injury, he headed a stoppage-time winner against Leicester City at the Emirates.

Style of play

Welbeck has never been a pure goal poacher. Coaches value his pressing, link-up play and willingness to run for the team. At Brighton, that selfless style was paired with sharper finishing, and the goals followed.

Ghana

Welbeck chose England at international level, but he has spoken about his Ghanaian roots and his family’s influence. Ghanaian fans have long followed his career.

Resilience

Welbeck’s career could have ended in the treatment room several times. Instead, the boy from Longsight kept coming back, and in his thirties he produced some of the best football of his career.
