Florida officer faces multiple felony charges for allegedly stealing home of deceased man

Say, WHAT?! Florida Police Officer Arrested After Allegedly Finding Man Dead During Welfare Check & Taking Over His Home

A Florida police officer was arrested for allegedly stealing a deceased man's house following a welfare check. Brian Louis Sguros, a former officer with the Lauderhill Police Department, faces multiple felony charges after he reportedly exploited his position to claim the home of Dennis West, who died in July 2022.

Sguros was taken into custody on October 20, 2026, in Lauderhill after a detailed investigation led by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. The case began when Sguros conducted a welfare check at West's residence, located at 4551 N.W. 12th Street. After finding West deceased, the officer allegedly misrepresented himself as a friend of the family to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office, falsely stating that West had no living relatives.

According to police reports, Sguros misused West's identification to obtain a city permit for renovations, claiming the property posed a hazard. He reportedly spent $214,000 on various renovations, asserting that he took control of the home to prevent criminal activity and to keep squatters away. This claim raised eyebrows, especially given the circumstances of West's death.

The police report details how Sguros used West’s identity to pay taxes and utilities, effectively maintaining the façade that West was still alive. He allegedly forged West’s signature on the permit for repairs, further complicating the case against him. Detectives found that Sguros accessed law enforcement databases to gather information about West, including his social security number.

In a particularly striking moment, a neighbor expressed disbelief when she witnessed Sguros move into West's home shortly after the welfare check. “He took over his house,” she said. “He used his information… his identity… why and how did he get the house so quick?”

The scheme unraveled when a real estate company purchased the house from West's family months later through probate. Following the transaction, Sguros filed a complaint against the company, seeking to recover the funds he claimed to have spent on renovations. This prompted the company’s attorney to contact the Lauderhill Police Department, ultimately leading to Sguros’s arrest.

Sguros faces charges of official misconduct, criminal use of deceased personal identification, offenses against computer use, unlawful use of a two-way communication device, and criminal use of personal identification information. His bond has been set at $25,000.

This case raises serious concerns about the ethical conduct of officers in positions of authority. The actions of Sguros not only breached public trust but also highlighted the potential for abuse of power within law enforcement. As the investigation continues, the community watches closely, aware that the implications of this incident extend beyond the individual involved.
