For years, John Dumelo was best known as a romantic lead in Ghanaian and Nigerian films. Then he started posting photos of himself in farm boots among rows of cassava and maize. Fans thought it was a phase. It was the start of a new chapter that led him into politics. In December 2024, the actor won a parliamentary seat in Accra, and soon afterwards he was appointed a deputy minister for food and agriculture.

Early life and farming

John Dumelo was born in Accra in 1984. He began acting young and studied at the University of Ghana. He became one of the most recognisable actors in Ghana in the 2000s and 2010s, starring in many Ghanaian films and Nollywood productions. Like several Ghanaian stars of his generation, he worked frequently with Nigerian actors and producers, which built his fan base across West Africa.

He invested in agriculture, growing crops on farms in different parts of Ghana and encouraging young people to see farming as a business.

Marriage and politics

He married Mawunya Dumelo in 2018, and the couple have children. Dumelo was a long-time supporter of the National Democratic Congress. In 2020, he contested the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat in Accra but lost. In the December 2024 elections, he won the seat, joining Parliament as part of the NDC’s large majority. He was later appointed Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, a role linked to his interest in farming.

He joined a growing list of entertainers who have moved into Ghanaian politics. Dumelo uses social media to share his farming, political work and family life, and has a large following.

Criticism and the 2020 race

Like other politicians, he faces scrutiny over his performance and promises. Young Ghanaians often cite him as an example of combining fame with business and public service. In 2020, Dumelo ran against Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the NPP, who held the seat. He lost, but the campaign raised his political profile, and he kept working in the constituency over the following four years, preparing for a second attempt.

John Dumelo made his name in front of cameras. His second career began in muddy fields and ended up, for now, in Parliament.
