At 15, Kalidou Koulibaly was told he was not good enough. Metz released him, with the academy manager later saying he was too introverted and below their expectations. Years later, he was captaining Senegal to their first Africa Cup of Nations title.
Saint-Dié
Koulibaly was born on 20 June 1991 to Senegalese parents in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, in eastern France. He grew up in a diverse community and has said that growing up there taught him to see everyone as a brother.
Released
He began at local club Saint-Dié and joined Metz, which let him go at 15. He kept playing and returned to Metz, starting his professional career there in 2010.
Genk
In 2012, he moved to Belgian club Genk, winning the Belgian Cup in his first season. His strength and calm on the ball attracted attention.
Napoli
Koulibaly joined Napoli in 2014. Over eight seasons, he became one of the best centre-backs in Europe and a hero to Napoli’s fans. He won the Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia in 2020.
Standing up to racism
In Italy, Koulibaly was subjected to racist chants during matches. His dignified responses and the solidarity shown by his teammates and fans made him a symbol in the fight against racism in football.
France or Senegal
Born in France to Senegalese parents, he played for France’s under-20 team before choosing Senegal. He made his senior debut in 2015.
Senegal
He played at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2018 World Cup, and helped Senegal reach the 2019 AFCON final. In the 2021 edition, played in early 2022, he captained Senegal as they beat Egypt in the final to win the title for the first time.
Chelsea and Al-Hilal
After a season at Chelsea, Koulibaly moved to Saudi club Al-Hilal in 2023.
Style of play
Koulibaly is known for his strength, reading of the game and composure with the ball. At Napoli, he was the base from which the team built attacks, and forwards found him difficult to beat in the air or on the ground.
Napoli’s hero
Napoli supporters still sing about him. His years in Naples, alongside players such as Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens, made him one of the club’s most loved foreign players of the modern era.
The quiet boy
The academy that released him thought he was too quiet. He became a captain known for leading by example, proof that a young player’s personality at 15 does not decide what he will become.
