His face is everywhere on WhatsApp. A wide-eyed stare, a mouth half open in confusion: images of John Okafor, known as Mr Ibu, became some of the most shared memes in Africa. Behind the memes was an actor who appeared in hundreds of Nollywood films and made millions laugh.
Mr Ibu
Okafor took his stage name from the film Mr Ibu (2004), in which he played a bumbling character who causes chaos wherever he goes. The name stuck, and fans rarely called him anything else.
Early life
John Okafor was born in Enugu State, in south-eastern Nigeria. He worked various jobs before acting and became known in Nollywood from the 1990s and 2000s.
Comic style
Mr Ibu’s comedy relied on physical humour, facial expressions and absurd situations. He often played characters who were foolish, stubborn or easily fooled. His films were popular with families.

Prolific
He appeared in a huge number of films, many alongside other comic actors such as Osita Iheme and Chinedu Ikedieze, known as Aki and Pawpaw. His films circulated widely across Africa on DVD and later online.
Memes
In the social media era, still images from his films became reaction memes. A new generation knew his face without having seen his films.
Illness
In 2023, his family announced that he was seriously ill. He underwent several surgeries and had a leg amputated. Fans and colleagues raised money for his treatment.
His death
Mr Ibu died on 2 March 2024 in Lagos. Tributes came from across Nollywood and beyond, and fans shared their favourite memes and scenes.
Legacy
He is remembered as one of the most recognisable faces of Nollywood comedy. His work brought laughter to millions of households.
Nollywood comedy
Mr Ibu belonged to a generation of comic actors who made Nollywood popular across Africa in the 2000s, before streaming and big-budget films changed the industry.
Off screen
Colleagues described Okafor as warm and generous off screen. He spoke in interviews about his faith and his gratitude to fans, and in his last years he appeared more often in news about his health than in new films.
Many actors hope to be remembered for one great role. Mr Ibu became one: the name, the character and the face that still answers thousands of messages a day.
