Entertainment Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o: the Kenyan writer who gave up English and went to prison for a play Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, one of Africa's most celebrated writers, was detained without trial in Kenya after a 1977 play in Gikuyu, later stopped writing fiction in English and spent decades in exile. He died in Atlanta in May 2025, aged 87.
