U.S. court has significantly reduced the $18 million defamation damages initially awarded to Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in his lawsuit against former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong. The revised compensation now stands at a mere $500, following a successful motion for remittitur filed by Agyapong.
Background of the Case
The legal battle began after Agyapong made defamatory remarks about Anas during a 2021 interview on The Daddy Fred Show, labeling him a “thief” and a “criminal.” Anas argued that these accusations severely damaged his reputation and endangered his life. In response, he filed a defamation lawsuit in the U.S. in 2022.
In March 2025, a U.S. jury found Agyapong guilty of malicious defamation and awarded Anas $18 million in damages. However, Agyapong filed a motion for remittitur, requesting the court to reduce the damages. The trial judge granted this motion, deeming the original amount excessive, and reduced the award to $500.
Anas’ Response
Anas expressed his disappointment over the reduced damages but emphasized that his pursuit of the case was never about the money. In a statement posted on his Facebook page, he said:
“This fight has not been about the money, but rather, a fight for truth and justice. I am happy that not a single allegation was proven against me in court when Kennedy Agyapong was given a full opportunity to substantiate his claims.”
He further stated his commitment to continue his work in exposing corruption, asserting that the ruling affirms his integrity and the baselessness of the allegations against him.
The court’s decision has sparked mixed reactions among Ghanaians. Some view the reduction as a setback for Anas, while others believe it highlights the challenges journalists face in seeking justice. The case continues to be a topic of intense discussion on social media platforms.
