The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has confirmed the arrest of approximately 50 Nigerian nationals during a special dawn operation at McCarthy Hills in the Ga South Municipality. The move follows intelligence suggesting illegal residency and human trafficking linked to cybercrime.
According to a statement issued by the GIS, the operation, carried out early Thursday morning, targeted foreign nationals suspected of being trafficked into the country and coerced into online fraud schemes by criminal facilitators.
Also arrested was the landlord of the apartment complex where the illegal activities were allegedly taking place.
“This operation was based on intelligence gathered on the illegal stay of some foreign nationals in the area, some of whom were trafficked into the country and forced into cyber fraud by their facilitators,” the GIS said.
Authorities are currently investigating the full extent of the suspected trafficking and criminal network. The GIS noted that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to clamp down on illegal migration, human trafficking, and cybercrime — crimes that have drawn growing concern among law enforcement and the public.
The statement was signed by M. Amoako-Atta, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration and Head of Public Affairs, who urged the public to await further details as the probe continues.
