Former Director of the Signals Bureau at the Office of the President, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, appeared in court today alongside his wife as their high-profile criminal trial formally opened.

Mr. Adu-Boahene, his wife, and two other defendants are facing 11 charges, including stealing, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The charges stem from an alleged misappropriation of GH₵49 million intended for a national cybersecurity enhancement project.

According to prosecutors, the funds, earmarked for securing Ghana’s digital infrastructure, were illegally diverted through a private company. The state alleges that the money was used to acquire luxury vehicles, real estate, and other personal assets, rather than being spent on the planned cybersecurity initiatives.

The accused were present at the High Court in Accra, where proceedings began with a reading of the charges and an outline of the prosecution’s case. State attorneys argue that the transactions involved a deliberate scheme to siphon public funds under the guise of legitimate contracts.

Sources within the Attorney-General’s Department indicate that the government is treating the matter as a serious breach of national trust, particularly given the sensitivity of the Signals Bureau’s mandate and the critical role of cybersecurity in national security.

Legal representatives for Mr. Adu-Boahene and his co-accused are expected to challenge the prosecution’s case and argue that the transactions in question were legally executed under authorized government frameworks. The defence has so far not commented publicly.

The case has drawn significant public and media attention due to the high-ranking nature of the accused and the large sums involved. It also raises fresh concerns about accountability and oversight within government security agencies.

The trial continues later this month, with prosecutors expected to call key witnesses and present documentation to support their claims of financial impropriety.
