Radio 1 has announced a massive shakeup, axing six long-time presenters, including Dean McCullough and Melvin Odoom, in favor of a new raft of influencers and new talent.

The six departing DJs are Rickie Haywood-Williams, Melvin Odoom, Dean McCullough, Nat O'Leary, James Cusack, and Swarzy. According to an Instagram post by the radio station, the presenters will be leaving their shows at the end of August. The post expressed gratitude towards the departing DJs, stating, 'We thank them for their passion, creativity, and dedication and wish them all the very best for whatever comes next.'

Rickie Haywood-Williams and Melvin Odoom, who have been presenting the mid-morning Live Lounge slot with co-presenter Charlie Hedges for seven years and five years respectively, will be leaving the station. Charlie, 39, will remain at Radio 1, and will now present the Live Lounge show with Jeremiah Asiamah, 28, from 10.30am to 1pm on weekday mornings.

In addition to the new Live Lounge show, Radio 1 has announced several other changes to its schedule. Internet personality and podcaster GK Barry will present a series of Radio 1 programmes during the year, beginning with a six-week run from 10 September at 1pm. Award-winning duo Mylo & Rosie are taking over Early Breakfast, following a 10-year stint at Hits Radio West Yorkshire where they won multiple ARIAs. Lauren Layfield, 28, will host The Official Chart: First Look from Birmingham each Sunday between 4pm and 7pm.

The station's new presenter showcase will move from Friday Early Breakfast to weekend mornings between 6am and 7am. Melvin Odoom shared the news of his departure on his Instagram account, telling fans that presenting on Radio 1 had been a dream. He expressed gratitude towards the incredible producers he had worked with behind the scenes over the years, as well as the Radio 1 listeners, who he thanked for sticking with him every week.

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of BBC Radio 1, has welcomed the changes, stating that Charlie and Jeremiah taking the reins of Radio 1's Live Lounge marks an exciting new chapter. He added that the station is also delighted to welcome GK Barry and Charley Marlowe to brand-new programmes on the network, where they will each bring their own unmistakable humour, personality, and wit.
