Jeremie Frimpong’s middle name, Agyekum, tells you where his family comes from. Born in the Netherlands, raised in Manchester and famous in Germany, the speedy wing-back has become one of the most exciting players of his generation.

Born in the Netherlands

Frimpong was born on 10 December 2000 in the Netherlands and is of Ghanaian descent. His family moved to England when he was seven.

Four countries to choose from

Frimpong holds Dutch, Ghanaian, British and French citizenship, which made him eligible to play for the Netherlands, Ghana, England or France.

Manchester City

At a youth tournament, he caught the eye of scouts from Manchester City and Liverpool and was named the best player. He chose City, which was closer to home, and joined the club at the age of nine, progressing through its youth teams.

Celtic

On 2 September 2019, he signed for Celtic in Scotland. His speed and skill made him a fan favourite. He won his first honour on 8 December 2019, when Celtic beat Rangers 1-0 in the Scottish League Cup final, and finished the season with the Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup.

Leverkusen

On 27 January 2021, he joined Bayer Leverkusen. Under Xabi Alonso, he became one of the most dangerous attacking full-backs in Europe.

The unbeaten season

In 2023-24, Frimpong was a key figure as Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title, confirmed with a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen on 14 April 2024. A 2-1 win over Augsburg on 18 May 2024 completed the first unbeaten season in German top-flight history. Leverkusen also won the DFB-Pokal.

The Netherlands

On 13 October 2023, he made his senior debut for the Netherlands as a substitute in a Euro 2024 qualifier against France.

Liverpool

Ghana’s interest

Ghanaian fans had hoped he might choose the Black Stars. He chose the Netherlands, but many in Ghana still follow his career with pride.

The boy from the tournament

One youth tournament brought two of England’s biggest clubs to watch him. Years later, after Glasgow and Leverkusen, he ended up at Liverpool, one of the clubs that first noticed him.
