In the 2023-24 season, Bayer Leverkusen did something no German club had done before: they won the Bundesliga without losing a single league match. Leading their attack for much of the season was a Nigerian striker who had arrived that summer from Belgium. Victor Boniface scored goals, bullied defenders and celebrated with a flair that made him a fan favourite. Injuries interrupted his season, but by the end he had a league title and a cup winner’s medal.
Early life and the unbeaten title
Boniface was born in Akure, Ondo State, around 2000. He played for youth teams in Nigeria before moving abroad. He began his European career with Bodo/Glimt in Norway, where injuries slowed his early progress. At Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium, he scored regularly, including in European competition, attracting attention from bigger clubs.

He joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2023 and made an instant impact under coach Xabi Alonso. Leverkusen won the 2023-24 Bundesliga unbeaten, ending Bayern Munich’s long run of titles.
Injury, the Super Eagles and style
The club also won the DFB-Pokal that season. A thigh injury kept him out for part of the season, but he returned for the run-in. He made his debut for Nigeria in 2023. Boniface is known for his humour and lively social media presence. He combines strength, pace and finishing, and is good at holding up the ball.
His success raised hopes in Nigeria that he could lead the Super Eagles’ attack. Under Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen played fast, attacking football, and Boniface’s ability to hold the ball and bring teammates into play suited the system well.
Goals in Europe and social media
In his first months at Leverkusen, Boniface scored in the Bundesliga and the Europa League, quickly becoming one of the most talked-about new signings in Germany. His strength made him hard to knock off the ball, and his link-up play helped teammates such as Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka. At Union Saint-Gilloise, he helped the Belgian club compete near the top of the league and in European competition, raising his profile across the continent.
His lively videos and celebrations online made him popular with fans in Nigeria and Germany. Victor Boniface arrived in Germany as a relatively unknown name. Within a year, he was part of a team that changed the history of the Bundesliga.
