LA Galaxy had gone a decade without a league title when Joseph Paintsil arrived in 2024. The Ghanaian winger, signed from Belgian club Genk, quickly became one of the team’s most dangerous attackers. By December, the Galaxy were champions again, winning the MLS Cup at home in Los Angeles. For Paintsil, it was a season that made his name in American football.

Early life and LA Galaxy

Paintsil was born in Ghana in 1997 and played youth football in the Tema area. He moved to Europe with Ferencvaros in Hungary, where he gained experience in a competitive league. At Genk in Belgium, he became a regular, known for his pace and work rate on the wing.

He joined LA Galaxy in 2024 and made an immediate impact in Major League Soccer.

MLS Cup 2024 and the Black Stars

The Galaxy won the MLS Cup in December 2024, their first title in a decade and a record sixth overall. Paintsil was a key part of the attacking line. He combined with attackers such as Gabriel Pec and Dejan Joveljic in one of the league’s most exciting front lines. Paintsil has played for Ghana’s national team.

He is known for speed, directness and determination. Galaxy fans quickly took to his energy and celebrations.

Ghanaians in MLS and adapting

He joined a growing list of Ghanaian players in American football. His success in the United States raised his profile at home in Ghana. His career shows that a path through less glamorous leagues can lead to major trophies. Moving to Los Angeles meant adjusting to new travel distances, climates and styles of play. Paintsil settled quickly, and his direct running suited the open, attacking style of the Galaxy. Fans responded to his work rate as much as his goals.

The final and Genk

The MLS Cup final was played in Los Angeles in December 2024, and the Galaxy beat the New York Red Bulls to lift the trophy. Celebrations in the city marked a return to the top for one of the league’s most famous clubs. Supporters at Genk remember him as a hard-working winger who rarely stopped running, and his move to America was seen as a reward for years of steady progress in Europe.

Joseph Paintsil’s career took him from Tema to Budapest, Belgium and Los Angeles. In his first American season, he finished it holding a championship trophy.
