At most major tournaments, the top scorer is a famous striker from a big club. At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Golden Boot went to a 34-year-old from Equatorial Guinea who was playing in the Spanish third division. Emilio Nsue scored five goals, including a hat-trick against Guinea-Bissau, as Equatorial Guinea topped a group that included Nigeria and the hosts, Ivory Coast. His performances made him one of the stories of the tournament.
Early life and Equatorial Guinea
Emilio Nsue López was born on 30 September 1989 in Palma, Mallorca, to an Equatoguinean father and a Spanish mother. He represented Spain at youth level, playing alongside a generation of Spanish players who went on to big careers. Nsue came through Mallorca’s academy and played in Spain and England, including spells with Middlesbrough and Birmingham City.

He switched to Equatorial Guinea, his father’s country, and became captain of the national team, known as the National Thunder.
The 2023 AFCON and the Golden Boot
The tournament, held in Ivory Coast in early 2024, was one of Equatorial Guinea’s best. Equatorial Guinea opened by holding Nigeria to a 1-1 draw. He then scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Guinea-Bissau. It was the standout individual performance of his tournament. Equatorial Guinea beat Ivory Coast 4-0 in the group stage, a famous result. Nsue scored twice in that match.
Equatorial Guinea finished top of their group but were knocked out by Guinea in the round of 16. Nsue finished as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals. At 34, his success came late in a career that had often been spent outside the spotlight.
Reaction at home
Equatorial Guinea is one of Africa’s smallest countries by population. The national team has often included players born or raised in Spain, reflecting historic links between the two countries. The team’s run at the tournament was celebrated in Malabo and Bata, where fans gathered to watch the matches. Nsue became a national hero almost overnight.
As captain, Nsue was the experienced voice in a young squad. Team-mates spoke of how his confidence lifted the group throughout the tournament. Emilio Nsue arrived at the tournament as a little-known veteran. He left it as the man who had scored more goals than any of Africa’s star strikers.
