In 1992, a low-budget film about a man who joins a secret cult in pursuit of wealth became a sensation across Nigeria. Living in Bondage is widely seen as the film that launched Nollywood. Among its cast was a young actor named Kanayo O. Kanayo, whose screen presence would make him one of the industry’s best-known faces for the next three decades. He became famous for playing rich, powerful and often sinister men, and for his commanding voice.
Early life and Living in Bondage
Kanayo O. Kanayo was born Anayo Modestus Onyekwere in Imo State, in south-eastern Nigeria. He took up acting as a young man. In Living in Bondage, he played a member of the cult that lures the main character, Andy Okeke. The film’s success made its cast famous. Kanayo became associated with roles as chiefs, cult leaders and wealthy men with dark secrets. He embraced the image, which made him one of Nollywood’s most recognisable villains.

Hundreds of films, law and politics
Over his career, he has appeared in a very large number of films, working with many of Nollywood’s leading directors and producers. He has acted in both English and Igbo-language films, and is a familiar figure in Igbo popular culture. Later in life, he studied law, a move that surprised many fans and showed his interest in public life beyond acting.
He has shown interest in politics and has commented publicly on governance in Nigeria. He appeared in the 2019 sequel, Living in Bondage: Breaking Free, linking the original film to a new generation. He has received lifetime achievement recognition for his contribution to Nollywood.
Catchphrases and mentoring
Scenes from his films have become memes on Nigerian social media, often shared with jokes about rituals and sudden wealth. He has taken the jokes in good humour and sometimes joined in. As one of the industry’s elders, he is often asked for advice by younger actors. He has spoken about discipline, professionalism and the need for actors to plan for life after fame.
Kanayo O. Kanayo has played so many ritualists that fans joke about it to his face. Few Nollywood actors have turned one kind of role into such a long career.
