By the mid-2000s, Stephanie Okereke was one of Nollywood’s most popular actresses, starring in a long run of romantic dramas. Many stars in her position would have kept going. Instead, she went to study filmmaking in the United States and came back determined to make films about issues she cared about. Her 2014 film Dry told the story of a young girl married off as a child who suffers obstetric fistula after childbirth. It drew attention to a problem affecting many women in West Africa, and it changed how people saw her career.
Early life and stardom
Stephanie Okereke was born in 1982 and grew up in Imo State, in south-eastern Nigeria. She took part in the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant, which brought her early public attention. She began acting in the early 2000s and quickly became a leading lady in Nollywood films. She studied filmmaking at the New York Film Academy, wanting more control over the stories she told.
Her 2008 film Through the Glass, which she wrote and directed, was among her first major projects behind the camera.
Dry and her advocacy
Dry, released in 2014, tells the story of a girl married to an older man who develops fistula after giving birth too young. Obstetric fistula is an injury caused by prolonged labour without medical help. It can leave women incontinent and isolated. The film won awards and was screened at festivals and advocacy events. Okereke Linus has worked with organisations campaigning for maternal health and against child marriage.
She married Linus Idahosa in 2012, adding Linus to her professional name. The couple have children and she has spoken about balancing motherhood with filmmaking.
Later work and why Dry mattered
She has continued to produce and direct, and to act in selected roles. Her career encouraged other Nollywood actresses to move into directing and producing. Few Nollywood films had dealt so directly with child marriage and its health consequences. By casting known actors and filming in a realistic style, Dry carried the subject into living rooms where it was rarely discussed.
Stephanie Okereke Linus became famous playing romantic leads. Dry, the film she is most associated with now, is about an injury most of her early fans had never heard of.
