Desmond Elliot: the Nollywood leading man who moved into Lagos politics

In the 2000s, Desmond Elliot was one of the faces Nollywood fans saw most often on the covers of home videos. Handsome, smooth-voiced and comfortable in romantic roles, he starred in dozens of films and became a household name across Nigeria and its diaspora. He later moved behind the camera as a director and producer. Then, in 2015, he made a career change that surprised some fans: he won a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Surulere. His story shows how Nigerian celebrity can become a path into politics.

Early life and leading man

Desmond Elliot was born in Lagos in 1974. He grew up in the city and developed an interest in performing from a young age. He began his career in television before moving into the booming home-video industry of the late 1990s and early 2000s. He became known for romantic dramas and family films, often playing charming, successful men caught in love triangles.

Like many Nollywood stars of the era, he appeared in a very large number of films, sometimes several in a single year.

Directing, television and politics

Elliot moved into directing and producing, working on films and television projects for the growing Nigerian market. He also appeared in and produced television series, broadening his audience. In 2015, he was elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly to represent Surulere Constituency I on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. He was re-elected in later elections and has served on Assembly committees.

During the EndSARS protests of 2020, comments he made in the Assembly about young people and social media drew strong criticism online, and his social media pages filled with angry replies.

Family and legacy so far

Elliot is married and has children. He has generally kept his family life out of the spotlight. He has continued to appear at film events while carrying out his duties as a lawmaker. His move into politics followed a broader trend of Nigerian entertainers seeking public office. For many fans, he remains the leading man of their favourite 2000s films, whatever they think of his politics.

Desmond Elliot built his fame playing charming men on video covers. Since 2015 most of his public appearances have been in the Lagos Assembly.
