A Statue Won’t Feed His Kids and Family” – Afia Akoto Calls for Meaningful Legacy to Honor Daddy Lumba

Entrepreneur, philanthropist, and politician Afia Akoto, has called for a more impactful way to honor the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, beyond symbolic gestures.

During her visit to the musician’s residence, Afia stated that while building a statue may serve as a lasting memory for future generations, it won’t directly support the family Daddy Lumba left behind.

“Building a statue for Daddy Lumba won’t feed his family or his children,” she said. “It’ll be a memory, yes—but we can also create avenues that generate proceeds to support his children and wife. That would mean a lot to his legacy.”

Afia, who previously served as Deputy CEO of MASLOC and is a Deputy Communications Director for the NPP, also used the moment to speak against rivalry and negativity within the Ghanaian creative space. She urged the public to unite in celebrating legends while they are alive, rather than waiting until they are gone to show appreciation.

“We should put away the rivalry attacks on our legends and celebrate them while they’re still here,” she emphasized. “Let’s do away with the negativity.”

Her comments have since sparked conversations about how Ghana honors its cultural icons and whether enough is done to support their families after their passing.
