Alice Diop showcases diverse artistic voices in Paris with her new installation Geste de Consolation

‘I’m bringing together women who nourish me’: French film-maker Alice Diop on her debut installation

Alice Diop has transformed the 60-meter-long central hall of the Palais d’Iena in Paris into a collective voice of artistic expression with her new installation, Geste de Consolation. This project brings together the works of artists, writers, composers, and poets, intertwining their narratives into a singular experience.

Diop recently returned to France from California, where she attended a two-week celebration of her work at the University of California, Berkeley. During this event, academics engaged with her documentaries Nous (We) and Vers La Tendresse (Towards Tenderness), as well as her acclaimed feature film Saint Omer. The film, which received the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, is inspired by a real trial involving a Senegalese woman whose baby drowned at sea. Over two hours, it examines the complexities of race, culture, and motherhood in contemporary France. It also marked a significant milestone as the first film by a black female director entered by France for the 2023 Academy Awards.

In Geste de Consolation, Diop's approach reflects her cinematic style. Her installations often mirror the slow, immersive quality of her films, where the camera lingers on subjects, allowing their stories to unfold with intensity. The installation invites visitors to engage with a diverse array of voices, echoing her belief in the importance of shared narratives.

The Palais d’Iena, a historic venue, provides a fitting backdrop for this exploration of artistic voices. Diop's installation aims to create a dialogue around themes of consolation, touching on the collective experiences that bind individuals across different backgrounds. Each piece within the installation contributes to a broader conversation about identity and resilience in the face of adversity.

Diop's recent achievements come on the heels of increasing recognition within the film industry. The success of Saint Omer at international festivals has solidified her position as a significant voice in contemporary cinema. Her work has been noted for its ability to tackle difficult subjects with sincerity and depth, capturing the nuances of human experience.

As Diop continues to expand her artistic endeavors, Geste de Consolation stands as a reflection of her journey. It encapsulates her commitment to exploring the intersections of culture and identity, inviting audiences to consider their own experiences and the narratives that shape them.

The installation not only highlights Diop's artistic vision but also acts as a gathering point for a multitude of perspectives. In a world increasingly defined by division, her work seeks to unify through shared stories and collective understanding. This approach resonates within the context of her film work, where she has consistently confronted the complexities of modern life.

In a recent interview, Diop emphasized her desire to create spaces where dialogue can flourish. "Art needs to reflect the world we live in," she said, underscoring her belief in the transformative power of artistic expression. This sentiment resonates throughout Geste de Consolation, where the convergence of diverse voices creates a rich tapestry of human experience.

As the installation opens to the public, it will be a testament to the power of art to connect and heal. Diop's work continues to challenge conventions, inviting audiences to engage with complex themes in a thoughtful manner. Through Geste de Consolation, she not only presents a collection of artistic voices but also reinforces the idea that in our shared narratives lies the potential for understanding and solace.
