Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of political persecution following his recent arrest, describing the action as driven by “pure hatred” rather than justice.
Speaking during a segment on Wontumi TV, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) condemned the move and questioned the motives behind the government’s treatment of him.
In a video clip shared by Ghanaian blogger King Bygone and made available to The 1957 News, Chairman Wontumi stated: “The way at which his government is treating me is very bad. That’s not how it’s supposed to be done.”
Wontumi, who was visibly upset, insisted he had done nothing wrong to warrant arrest or public humiliation. “I haven’t done anything wrong. I don’t deserve this kind of treatment,” he added.
He directly called on President Mahama to focus on leading the nation instead of allegedly using the powers of the state to intimidate him. “President Mahama should focus on governing his country and stop intimidating me,” Wontumi stated.
While details of the arrest remain unclear, the incident has sparked significant attention within political circles and among party supporters. NPP loyalists have expressed concern about what they see as increasing harassment of opposition figures under the current administration.
As of now, the presidency and state security agencies have not issued a formal response to Wontumi’s comments or confirmed the basis of the arrest.
The situation is likely to deepen political tensions as Ghana moves toward another high-stakes electoral season, with both major parties accusing each other of undemocratic conduct.
