Femi Otedola has been rich, nearly ruined and rich again. The Nigerian businessman made his fortune distributing petroleum products, lost much of it during the 2008 financial crisis and rebuilt his wealth through power generation and other investments. He is also one of Nigeria’s best-known celebrity fathers, thanks to his daughters, the DJ Cuppy and the actress Temi Otedola.

Early life and Forte Oil

Otedola was born in 1963. His father, Sir Michael Otedola, was governor of Lagos State in the Second Republic. He founded businesses in petroleum distribution and later became a major shareholder and chairman of Forte Oil. The global financial crisis of 2008 hit his investments hard, and he faced large debts. He has spoken about how he recovered.

He invested in Geregu Power, a power generation company, which became one of his key businesses. In 2019, he sold his stake in Forte Oil, focusing on power and other investments.

Banking, philanthropy and family

He later built a significant stake in one of Nigeria’s major banking groups, raising his profile in the financial sector. Otedola has made large donations to causes such as education and the arts, including support for veteran entertainers. His daughter Florence, known as DJ Cuppy, is a DJ, music producer and media personality with a large following.

His daughter Temi is an actress and fashion blogger who starred in Citation by Kunle Afolayan. Otedola shares family moments and business news on social media, attracting attention and commentary. He is often described as one of Nigeria’s most visible billionaires, at ease with publicity.

Lessons and investment style

His story of recovery from heavy losses is often cited in discussions about business resilience. Otedola is known for taking large stakes in listed companies and building positions over time, an approach that has drawn attention from financial analysts and the media. His moves on the Nigerian stock market are closely watched by investors. He has publicly supported veteran Nigerian entertainers with donations, gestures that were widely praised.

He has remained closely connected to Lagos, where his father once served as governor. Femi Otedola has had fortunes rise and fall. His daughters have built fame of their own, and the family has become one of Nigeria’s most watched.
