Footballers Can Celebrate LGBTQ+ but Not Jesus? – Ghanaian Player Emmanuel Annor Fined GH¢500 Slams GFA

Ghanaian footballer Emmanuel Annor has ignited a fiery debate after being slapped with a GHC500 fine for displaying an “I belong to Jesus” message during his goal celebration in a recent Ghana Premier League game.

According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Annor’s act violated Law 4 of IFAB’s Laws of the Game, which prohibits players from revealing religious, political, or personal slogans.

But what was intended to be a simple disciplinary action has now spiraled into a national conversation about faith, fairness, and freedom of expression.

Annor, clearly unshaken, took to X (formerly Twitter) and boldly posted:

“Why can football players celebrate LGBTQ+ sexuality but not their love for Jesus?
Romans 14:8 – If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. ✟
It’s the kingdom work on the pitch!”

The post immediately sparked thousands of reactions, with supporters hailing him as courageous, while others questioned the consistency of GFA’s disciplinary actions.

Critics argue that the rules are being selectively enforced, celebrating identity is acceptable, but glorifying Jesus? Apparently, that crosses a line.

This isn’t just about football anymore. It’s a culture clash playing out on the pitch. One goal, one celebration, and one bold message have kicked off a controversy that’s shaking more than just goalposts.

Is the GFA being fair? Or is this proof that faith is being sidelined in the beautiful game?
