Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has expressed his intention to pursue legal action against comedian OB Amponsah for using his name in a recent comedy show.
The Energy Minister stated, “I’ll have my lawyers write to OB Amponsah to share revenue for using my name in his comedy show.”
OB Amponsah, a renowned Ghanaian comedian and optometrist, held his 10th-anniversary comedy special at the Bukom Boxing Arena on December 21, 2024.
The event, which attracted a full house, featured jokes on various topics, including politics, relationships, and social issues. Despite the show’s success, OB revealed that he incurred a loss of approximately GH₵40,000, attributing it to high operational costs and taxes.
The comedian had previously voiced concerns about the Ghana Revenue Authority’s 21.9% tax on ticket sales, describing it as burdensome.
He mentioned that such financial strains make it challenging for comedians to profit from their shows.
NAPO’s statement has sparked discussions about the boundaries of artistic expression and the legal implications of using public figures’ names in performances. As of now, OB Amponsah has not publicly responded to NAPO’s remarks.
The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Ghanaian comedians in balancing creative content with legal and financial considerations.
