In 2015, a singer in a three-piece suit and a cane appeared on television performing “Classic Man”. The song became a hit and earned a Grammy nomination. The singer was Jidenna.

Jidenna Theodore Mobisson was born in 1985 in Wisconsin to a Nigerian father, Oliver Mobisson, an academic and engineer, and an American mother. He spent part of his early childhood in Enugu, Nigeria, before the family moved back to the United States. He studied at Stanford University.

Wondaland

Jidenna joined Wondaland Records, the label and collective founded by Janelle Monáe. “Classic Man”, featuring Roman GianArthur, was released in 2015 and became a hit, with a remix featuring Kendrick Lamar. The song was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

The Eephus

Wondaland’s 2015 compilation, The Eephus, introduced Jidenna alongside other artists from the collective, and he appeared on Janelle Monáe’s song “Yoga” the same year. Monáe’s support gave him a platform and a creative home, and the collective’s emphasis on style and concept suited his image.

“Classic Man” also celebrated a certain old-fashioned courtesy, which many listeners found refreshing in a genre often associated with bravado.

Style

Jidenna became known for his style, inspired partly by the dress of his father and grandfather, and by an idea of elegance as a form of dignity. His suits, hats and canes became his signature.

The Chief

His debut album, The Chief, released in 2017, was named in honour of his father, who had died in 2010, and explored themes of family, identity, masculinity and Nigerian heritage. Songs such as “Bambi” and “Little Bit More” showed a mix of hip-hop, R&B and African influences.

Africa

Jidenna has spoken about his Nigerian heritage and his experiences in Enugu. He has also performed in Africa and collaborated with African artists. His 2019 album 85 to Africa reflected his connection to the continent.

Television

Jidenna appeared in the series Luke Cage and Insecure, playing musicians.

Conversation

He has been outspoken about race, identity and the experiences of the African diaspora in the United States, sometimes causing controversy with his comments.

Legacy

Jidenna’s image and music brought a distinctive African-influenced elegance to American pop culture in the mid-2010s.

He sang about being a classic man. He credited the style to a father from Nigeria who dressed with care every day.
