KFC has announced the return of its iconic Popcorn Chicken to menus across the US, following a massive outcry from fans demanding its revival.

The cult-classic dish, which debuted in the 1990s, was discontinued in 2023, but its devoted followers continued to clamor for its return on social media. KFC's decision to bring back the fan-favorite food is seen as a response to the overwhelming demand from customers.

"We read every comment, every DM, and even every online petition signature, and the message was impossible to ignore," said Melissa Cash, Chief Marketing Officer, KFC US. The company has decided to revive Popcorn Chicken in three different forms: a 16 oz Popcorn Chicken Bucket with four dipping sauces for $10, a Popcorn Chicken Big Box featuring 6 oz. of Popcorn Chicken, two tenders, a medium order of fries, a medium drink, two dipping sauces and a chocolate chunk cookie for $10.99, and a Popcorn Chicken Combo with 6 oz of Popcorn Chicken with medium fries, a medium drink and one dipping sauce for $8.49.

The return of Popcorn Chicken is part of KFC's "Kentucky Fried Comeback" journey, which aims to listen to customers and give them what they're craving. By reviving a beloved menu item, the company is demonstrating its commitment to engaging with its most passionate fans. The decision to bring back Popcorn Chicken is also seen as a nod to the nostalgia of 90s "pop" culture, with the dish's return coinciding with a wave of retro-themed food trends.

Fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of Popcorn Chicken, with many taking to social media to express their excitement. "I was JUST talking about how I missed popcorn chicken this morning," chirped one commenter under a post by KFC announcing the item's revival. Others have praised the company for listening to customer feedback and bringing back a beloved menu item. "You have made my kid very happy. Thank you," wrote one commenter. However, some have criticized KFC for not reviving other cult classics, such as the Double Down – a high-octane bacon and cheese sandwich with fried chicken slices pinch-hitting for buns.

The return of Popcorn Chicken will be available while supplies last, with KFC joining forces with Giphy to develop several GIFs to celebrate the renaissance. The GIFs feature Col. Sanders himself, and customers can use them to express their excitement on social media. As fans continue to rejoice over the return of Popcorn Chicken, it remains to be seen how the company will respond to future customer demands and what other menu items might be revived in the future.
