At the launch of her 25 Years in Gospel Music Anniversary, Ghanaian gospel musician Grace Ashly shared her thoughts on the Ghana Black Stars’ recent performance and their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Known for her iconic cheer songs for the national team, Ashly was asked if she’d compose a new anthem as the Black Stars gear up for the global stage.
Her response was both candid and cautious.
Reflecting on Ghana’s dominant 5-0 victory over Chad on March 21, 2025, Ashly weigh in on the win, suggesting it was less a testament to the Black Stars’ prowess and more a reflection of Chad’s weakness. “We only beat Chad because they were weak, with small ribs,” she quipped, using a local expression to imply Chad’s inferiority.
She emphasized that the true measure of the team’s strength lies ahead in their next match against Madagascar, scheduled for Monday, March 24, 2025, in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Ashley, whose hits like “Yenie” for the 2014 World Cup rallied fans nationwide, expressed hope that the Black Stars wouldn’t falter. “Madagascar will prove our strength,” she said, urging the team to rise to the challenge.
While she didn’t confirm when a new song, her comments underscored her enduring passion for the team, tempered by a call for consistency.
As Ghana aims for the 2026 World Cup, Ashley’s words echo the nation’s cautious optimism.
