New Zealand election 2026 heads to tight finish with National leading at 8% count

NZ election 2026 live results: count on as National and Labour battle it out in knife-edge New Zealand poll

With 8% of votes counted in New Zealand’s 2026 general election, the National Party leads with 31.2%, narrowly ahead of Labour on 28.4%. The Greens hold 12.9%, Act 11.2%, New Zealand First 9.6%, Opportunity 5.7%, and Te Pāti Māori 0.4%. The numbers point to a tight contest with no clear majority in sight.

Polls before the election suggested no coalition would secure a majority of seats, leaving smaller parties in a position to determine the next government. The National Party’s lead at this early stage puts the right bloc within reach of power, but with more than 90% of votes yet to be tallied, the outcome remains fluid.

The race in New Zealand’s bellwether seat has drawn attention as a barometer for the national result. Voters there face a choice that could tip the balance amid this close contest. Minor parties like Act and New Zealand First have emerged as possible kingmakers, given their current standings just under or above 10%.

Labour’s 28.4% reflects a decline from previous elections, while the Greens and Act have consolidated support around 10-13%. Opportunity, a smaller party, has secured 5.7%, enough to potentially influence coalition talks. Te Pāti Māori remains marginal with 0.4%.

This election is among the closest in recent New Zealand history. The final result will depend on how the remaining votes are distributed and how parties negotiate alliances. The early count suggests a return to a National-led government is possible but far from certain.

As the counting continues, all eyes remain on the minor parties and the bellwether seat. The final weeks of vote tallying will determine whether New Zealand faces a stable coalition or a continued hold on political uncertainty.
