Beau Lamarre-Condon told a Sydney court on Thursday that the shooting of Jesse Baird in 2024 was not intentional, but admitted it was his fault. The 2024 double murder trial entered its second day of evidence as Lamarre-Condon took the witness stand to respond to charges accusing him of murdering the couple.
Lamarre-Condon pleaded not guilty to the murders but acknowledged responsibility for the shooting. He described seeing what he believed was a delivery motorcycle and explained his thought process in detail.
“I saw a hi-vis hooded jacket, waterproof long pants and gloves,” he told the court. “As soon as I saw that I had an idea … I wish that I didn’t do this … But I had the thought process that if I was to put on this helmet and outfit I could knock on Jesse’s door I would look like an UberEats driver without any verbal interaction with Jesse.”
He said he was concerned about knocking on the door directly. “At the very least I would have had an AVO out against me … police don’t hesitate to put another police on an AVO … I was worried if I knocked on the door it would be perceived as harassment.”
Australian media reported Lamarre-Condon returned to the witness box to continue his evidence after the prosecution outlined the charges against him. The court heard that the couple, including Jesse Baird, were shot dead in Sydney in 2024. The exact circumstances of the shooting remain under scrutiny.
Lamarre-Condon’s defence hinges on the claim that the shooting was accidental. He has denied any deliberate intent to kill. The court has yet to hear the full extent of witness testimony or forensic evidence.
The trial is ongoing, with the prosecution expected to present further details on the events leading up to the shootings. Lamarre-Condon’s admission of fault but denial of intent adds a complex dimension to the case.
The hearing continues amid close attention from the public and media, as Sydney grapples with the aftermath of the double murder.
