Ruth Negga was born in Ethiopia and grew up in Ireland. In 2017, she became one of the few Irish actors, and one of the few of Ethiopian heritage, to be nominated for an Academy Award.
Negga was born in Addis Ababa in 1982. Her father, an Ethiopian doctor, and her mother, an Irish nurse, met while working at a hospital there. When she was four, the political situation in Ethiopia led her and her mother to move to Limerick, Ireland. Her father planned to join them but died in a car accident in Ethiopia before he could.
Ireland and London
Negga grew up in Limerick and later lived in London. She studied acting at Trinity College Dublin and began working in Irish theatre and television.
Breakthrough
She appeared in the Irish film Breakfast on Pluto and in television dramas such as Misfits and Love/Hate. She later played Tulip O’Hare in the American series Preacher.
Loving
In 2016, Negga played Mildred Loving in Loving, directed by Jeff Nichols. The film tells the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple whose marriage was illegal in Virginia. Their case led to the landmark 1967 Supreme Court ruling, Loving v. Virginia, which struck down laws banning interracial marriage in the United States.
Negga’s quiet, restrained performance earned her nominations for the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Actress.
Passing
In 2021, she starred in Passing, directed by Rebecca Hall, about two Black women, one of whom passes as white in 1920s New York. Her performance won critical praise and several awards.
Stage
Negga has also performed on stage, including as Hamlet at the Gate Theatre in Dublin and in New York, and in Macbeth on Broadway alongside Daniel Craig in 2022.
Identity
Negga has spoken about growing up as a mixed-race girl in Limerick and about her Ethiopian heritage. She has said she felt both Irish and Ethiopian, and she has visited Ethiopia.
Legacy
Negga is part of a generation of actors whose heritage spans Africa and Europe and whose careers cross film, television and stage.
Her role in Loving was about a couple who refused to let the law decide whom they could love. Her own story began with a marriage across continents in an Addis Ababa hospital.
