The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has issued a public alert over the illegal removal of steel reinforcement from the Achimota-Ofankor underpass retaining wall on the N6 highway.
The disturbing act of vandalism came to light following a viral video shared by the social media handle Buzzstopboys, which exposed the compromised state of the retaining wall near Tantra Hill.
According to the GHA, the video showed rebars — the steel rods used to reinforce concrete — visibly exposed and allegedly stolen by unknown individuals.
Engineers from the authority, upon assessment, confirmed the spalling of concrete in the affected section, which led to the dangerous exposure of these critical structural elements.
Despite the damage, the GHA has assured the public that the underpass remains structurally sound for now and that swift repair works will be undertaken to prevent any future hazards.
But here’s the twist — this isn’t just mischief; it’s a criminal offense! The Authority reminded the public that tampering with public infrastructure is punishable under the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), Section 114, Subsection 4(b).
Authorities are urging all residents and commuters to be extra vigilant and report suspicious activity around public infrastructure.
Tips can be sent to the nearest police station or directly to the Public Affairs Division of the GHA.
“Your safety is our priority,” the statement read. And in this case, it’s not just a slogan — it’s a national call to action.
Stay alert. Report. And let’s protect our roads together.
