His stage name is short, but his full name tells the story: Olubowale Victor Akintimehin. Wale, the Washington rapper, is the son of Nigerian immigrants.

Wale was born in Washington, DC, in 1984. His parents had moved from Nigeria to the United States. He grew up in the Washington area, including in Maryland suburbs, where go-go, the local funk-based music, was the soundtrack of the city.

Go-go and hip-hop

Wale’s early mixtapes blended hip-hop with go-go rhythms, earning him attention in Washington and beyond. His mixtape The Mixtape About Nothing, inspired by the television show Seinfeld, became a cult favourite.

First deal

The producer Mark Ronson signed Wale to his label, and Wale’s debut album, Attention Deficit, was released in 2009. It included “Chillin”, featuring Lady Gaga, and earned critical praise, although sales were modest.

Maybach Music Group

After an early record deal, Wale signed with Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group in 2011. His album Ambition, released that year, included “Lotus Flower Bomb”, featuring Miguel, which earned a Grammy nomination. His album The Gifted, released in 2013, reached number one on the Billboard 200.

Seinfeld

His fascination with Seinfeld continued with The Album About Nothing, released in 2015, which featured Jerry Seinfeld himself speaking between songs. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200, his second chart-topping record.

Themes

Wale’s music deals with love, fame, anxiety and identity. He often references his Nigerian background and Yoruba family traditions, his parents’ expectations and life as a first-generation American.

Nigeria

He has spoken about his Yoruba name and heritage, and he has performed in Nigeria and collaborated with Nigerian artists. He has also been outspoken about Nigerian politics, including support for the EndSARS protests in 2020.

Sports

Wale is a passionate sports fan, particularly of Washington’s football and basketball teams, and has made music and commentary related to sports.

Later work

His later albums, including Wow… That’s Crazy in 2019, continued to mix introspection and radio hits, including “On Chill” with Jeremih.

Poetry

Critics often single out Wale’s wordplay and spoken-word style, and he has recorded long, reflective verses that read almost like poems.

Legacy

Wale is part of a generation of American rappers with African immigrant parents, alongside artists such as Tobe Nwigwe, who bring their heritage into American hip-hop.

He shortened his name for the stage. He never shortened the story behind it.
