There is heightened tension at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) Headquarters in Accra today as military personnel are deployed to the scene following a charged protest by supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Hundreds of agitated party faithful stormed the premises, demanding the immediate release of Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, who was reportedly arrested and detained under unclear circumstances.
Chanting party slogans and clad in NPP paraphernalia, the crowd surged around the NIB compound, prompting a swift response from security forces. Police presence was quickly reinforced by heavily armed military officers to restore calm and protect the facility.
The scene grew increasingly tense as party supporters clashed verbally with security personnel, insisting their beloved regional chairman was being unfairly targeted.
Eyewitnesses reported some minor scuffles and heated exchanges, though no major injuries have been confirmed.
The deployment of the military is seen as a signal that the government is taking no chances with security, especially as political temperatures continue to rise ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Meanwhile, former Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, had earlier visited the NIB to engage officials on the matter, deepening the political stakes surrounding the arrest.
As night falls, Ghanaians wait anxiously for an official statement. Will calm prevail, or is this just the beginning of a broader political showdown?
