Bomb threats force multiple European flights to divert, including Dublin-Rome plane landing in France

Multiple planes diverted as bomb threats to commercial flights reported across Europe – live

A Dublin-Rome flight was forced to land at a French military base after a bomb threat was reported aboard the plane on Thursday morning. The incident came amid a wave of similar threats across Europe, affecting flights in Italy, Czechia, Bulgaria, and Belgium.

The flight, originally scheduled to fly directly from Dublin to Rome, diverted to France following the threat. The decision to land at a military facility reflects heightened security protocols when dealing with potential explosives onboard commercial aircraft.

Italian news agency Ansa confirmed two other flights linked to Italy were affected by bomb threats on the same day. A WizzAir service from Milan Malpensa to Warsaw was rerouted to Vienna, where it landed safely. Meanwhile, a Finnair flight traveling from Helsinki to Rome Fiumicino also had to alter its route, though details of its final landing point were not disclosed.

In Belgium, the newspaper Le Soir reported a bomb threat against a LOT Polish Airlines flight departing Warsaw. That plane was directed to land at Brussels Airport’s Zaventem, where authorities conducted a thorough security check.

No details have been released about the nature of the threats, who made them, or whether any explosives were found. Authorities in the countries involved have not issued formal statements beyond confirming the diversions and landings.

Flights across Europe have faced increased security measures in recent months due to a rise in threat reports, but the number of coordinated threats on Thursday morning was unusual. The simultaneous nature of the incidents raised questions among aviation officials about their origin and intent, though no links have been publicly confirmed.

Passengers on the Dublin-Rome flight described confusion and anxiety as the plane diverted to an unexpected destination. Airport and airline staff in France, Austria, and Belgium responded rapidly to secure the aircraft and conduct inspections.

There have been no reports of injuries or arrests connected to these incidents. Aviation security experts have noted that bomb threat protocols require immediate diversion to the nearest suitable airport or military base, prioritizing safety and rapid response.

The affected airlines have yet to release full statements. Flights scheduled for the remainder of the day in the involved countries experienced delays or cancellations as authorities processed the security alerts.

The disruptions come amid ongoing scrutiny of airport security procedures across the continent. European aviation regulators continue to review protocols following a series of unrelated threats earlier this year, but no connection has been drawn between those and the latest spate.

Authorities in France, Italy, Belgium, and Austria are conducting investigations into the bomb threats. Police and intelligence agencies have not disclosed any suspects or motives at this stage.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updates as investigations continue. The series of diversions marks one of the more significant days of air travel disruption in Europe this year.
