In May 2015, Accra’s power cuts had become so frequent that Ghanaians had a word for them: dumsor. One evening, a crowd dressed in black gathered for a vigil to demand action, led by one of the country’s most famous actresses. Yvonne Nelson had already built a successful film career. That night she also became a symbol of celebrities using their fame to speak up. She has never really stopped since.

Early life and acting

Yvonne Nelson was born in Accra in 1985 and grew up in the city. She has written about a childhood that shaped her determination and her outspokenness. She entered the Miss Ghana pageant in 2005, which raised her profile and opened doors in entertainment. She appeared in many Ghanaian and Nigerian films from the late 2000s, becoming one of the leading faces of West African cinema.

Nelson moved into producing, with films such as Single and Married and House of Gold, which were commercial successes and featured stars from Ghana and Nigeria.

Dumsor, motherhood and the memoir

In 2015, she organised the #DumsorMustStop vigil in Accra, joined by other celebrities and citizens frustrated by power outages. The event drew national attention. She has a daughter, born in 2017, and often shares moments of motherhood with fans. In 2023, she published a memoir, I Am Not Yvonne Nelson, which discussed her childhood, family and relationships with unusual frankness. It caused intense debate in Ghana and sold widely.

She often comments on politics, gender and social issues, attracting both praise and criticism. Beyond film, she has worked on business ventures and brand partnerships. Younger Ghanaian actresses see her as an example of combining acting, producing and public engagement.

Awards and Single and Married

She has received awards and nominations for her acting and producing work. Her films often pair Ghanaian and Nigerian stars, building bridges between the two industries. Single and Married, released in 2012, followed a group of friends dealing with love, marriage and betrayal. Its mix of Ghanaian and Nigerian actors and its glossy style made it a hit with audiences in both countries and helped establish Nelson as a serious producer.

Yvonne Nelson’s career began on a pageant stage. Her most talked-about moments since then have come when she chose to speak plainly, whether about electricity or her own life.
