For a generation of Nollywood fans, Ramsey Nouah was the face of romance. In film after film in the late 1990s and 2000s, he played the charming lover, the heartbroken husband or the young man torn between two women. The “lover boy” label followed him for years. Then, in his late forties, he stepped behind the camera and directed one of the biggest Nollywood films of 2019.
Early life and the lover boy
Ramsey Tokunbo Nouah was born in Lagos in 1970. He began acting on television before moving into the booming home video industry. He starred in many romantic dramas and became one of Nollywood’s most popular leading men, often paired with leading actresses of the era. His performance in Kunle Afolayan’s The Figurine (2009) won wide praise and earned him a best actor award at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.

He showed comic range in films such as 30 Days in Atlanta, one of Nollywood’s box office hits.
Directing and Rattlesnake
In 2019, he made his directing debut with Living in Bondage: Breaking Free, a sequel to the 1992 classic that launched Nollywood. It was a box office success. He followed with Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story (2020), a remake of another 1990s Nollywood classic. Both films were produced by Play Network Studios, part of a wave of remakes of early Nollywood hits.
Nouah keeps his family life private, and is married with children. His career has lasted more than three decades, from VHS to streaming. Younger actors cite him as an example of reinvention and professionalism.
Romantic hits and awards
Many of his romantic films were released straight to video and passed from hand to hand across Nigeria and the diaspora, making him one of the most recognised faces in African homes. His films were widely watched in Ghana and other African countries, where Nollywood stars became household names. As a director, he has worked with a younger generation of actors, giving many of them their biggest roles.
He has won several acting awards in Nigeria and across Africa. Ramsey Nouah spent years as Nollywood’s favourite romantic hero. As a director, he went back to the industry’s first big hit and made it new for a generation that had only heard about it.
