Ola Aina grew up in London and spent years in Chelsea’s academy, one of the best in Europe. Like many talented young players, he found the path to Chelsea’s first team blocked. His career took him to Hull, Turin and west London before Nottingham Forest gave him a home in 2023. Along the way, he chose to play for Nigeria, the country of his parents, and became a key part of the Super Eagles defence.

Club career

Aina was born in London in 1996 to Nigerian parents. He joined Chelsea’s academy as a boy. He won youth trophies with Chelsea and made a handful of first-team appearances before going out on loan. A loan at Hull City in the Championship gave him regular senior football.

He moved to Torino in Italy, first on loan and then permanently, playing in Serie A. He spent a season on loan at Fulham in the Premier League. In 2023, he joined Nottingham Forest, where he became a regular and impressed with his defending and versatility.

Choosing Nigeria and AFCON 2023

Aina represented England at youth level before switching to Nigeria. He made his Super Eagles debut in 2017. He was part of the Nigeria squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, losing to the hosts. He can play on either side of defence and in wing-back roles. Injuries have interrupted parts of his career.

He is one of many British-born players of Nigerian heritage who have chosen to play for the Super Eagles. Teammates describe him as calm and hard-working.

Turin, Forest and the national team

His time at Torino gave him experience of Italian tactical football, which coaches say improved his positional discipline. He played regularly in Serie A against some of Europe’s best attackers, an education that served him well when he returned to England. Nottingham Forest supporters quickly took to his commitment and energy, and he became one of the club’s most consistent performers.

Under several coaches, he has been a regular choice for the Super Eagles, valued for his experience in top European leagues. Ola Aina’s career has taken a long route through three countries and several clubs. Nottingham Forest and the Super Eagles are where it finally came together.
