In the busy food stalls of Lagos, known as bukas, competition is fierce. Battle on Buka Street takes that rivalry and turns it into a family feud. Two half-sisters, raised by rival mothers, grow up fighting over everything and end up running competing food businesses on the same street. The film, released in December 2022, paired two of Nollywood’s biggest stars, Funke Akindele and Mercy Johnson Okojie, and became one of the biggest box office hits of the season.
The story, stars and food on screen
The half-sisters inherit their mothers’ rivalry. Their feud plays out through cooking, customers and family drama, with plenty of comic confrontations. Funke Akindele, known for Jenifa, and Mercy Johnson Okojie, known for dramatic roles, play the sisters. Seeing them together on screen was a major draw. Funke Akindele co-directed the film with Tobi Makinde. Akindele also produced it.

The film is full of Nigerian food, from amala and ewedu to jollof rice and pepper soup, and the buka setting gives it a lively atmosphere.
Cast, box office and reception
The cast includes several veteran actors and comedians, adding to the humour. Battle on Buka Street performed strongly in Nigerian cinemas over the Christmas season and became one of the highest-grossing Nollywood films of its year. The film continued Funke Akindele’s run of December hits, which also includes Omo Ghetto: The Saga and later A Tribe Called Judah.
The film gave Mercy Johnson a chance to show her comic side to a wide audience. Audiences praised the stars’ chemistry, while some critics found the plot predictable.
The buka and family themes
A buka is a simple Lagos eatery serving local dishes to workers, traders and commuters. Many Nigerians eat at one every week, so the setting felt instantly familiar to audiences. Beneath the jokes, the film deals with polygamy, jealousy between co-wives and the way children inherit their parents’ grudges. Those themes gave the comedy a recognisable emotional core.
The stars promoted the film heavily on social media in the weeks before release, with cast tours and cinema appearances that drew crowds. Battle on Buka Street turned a fight over customers into a fight over family. In December 2022, the real competition was for cinema seats, and the sisters won.
